Community Support & Education Classes

 

Across the country, thousands of trained NAMI volunteers bring peer-led programs to a wide variety of community settings, from churches to schools to NAMI Affiliates just like we do here at NAMITC. With the unique understanding of people with lived experience, these programs and support groups provide outstanding free education, skills training and support.

 

CLASSES

NAMI offers a variety of peer-led education courses free of charge to participants. Each is designed to meet the needs of its target audience. Classes emphasize the importance of hope and community and provide insights into challenges related to mental illness.

FAMILY TO FAMILY CLASS

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.
NAMI Family-to-Family is taught by NAMI-trained family members who have been there, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises.

PEER TO PEER CLASS

NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a free, eight-session educational program for adults with mental health conditions who are looking to better understand themselves and their recovery.

Taught by trained leaders with lived experience, this program includes activities, discussions and informative videos. However, as with all NAMI programs, it does not include recommendations for treatment approaches.

HOMEFRONT CLASS

NAMI Homefront is a free, 6-session educational program for families, caregivers and friends of military service members and veterans with mental health conditions.Based on the nationally recognized NAMI Family-to-Family program, NAMI Homefront is designed to address the unique needs of family, caregivers and friends of those who have served or are currently serving our country. The program is taught by trained family members of service members/veterans with mental health conditions.

BASICS CLASS

NAMI Basics is a 6-session education program for parents, caregivers and other family who provide care for youth (ages 22 and younger) who are experiencing mental health symptoms. This program is free to participants, 99% of whom say they would recommend the program to others. NAMI Basics is available both in person and online through NAMI Basics OnDemand.

PROVIDER CLASS

NAMI Provider introduces mental health professionals to the unique perspectives of people with mental health conditions and their families. You’ll develop enhanced empathy for their daily challenges and recognize the importance of including them in all aspects of the treatment process.NAMI Provider is a 15-hour program of in-service training taught by a team consisting of an adult with a mental health condition, a family member and a mental health professional who is also a family member or has a mental health condition themselves.

PRESENTATIONS

NAMI presentations offer audiences the opportunity to hear stories of lived experiences from people with mental health conditions. They create awareness, reduce stigma and increase empathy. These programs are part of NAMI’s national effort to change attitudes and stereotypes about what mental health conditions are like and how we view the people who have them.

ENDING THE SILENCE PRESENTATION

NAMI Ending the Silence is an engaging presentation that helps audience members learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions and what steps to take if you or a loved one are showing symptoms of a mental health condition.

IN OUR OWN VOICE PRESENTATION

NAMI In Our Own Voice presentations change attitudes, assumptions and ideas about people with mental health conditions. These free, 40-, 60- or 90-minute presentations provide a personal perspective of mental health conditions, as leaders with lived experience talk openly about what it’s like to have a mental health condition.

FAMILY & FRIENDS PRESENTATION

NAMI Family & Friends is a free 90-minute or four-hour seminar that informs people who have loved ones with a mental health condition how to best support them. It’s also an opportunity to meet other people in similar situations and gain community support.

SHARING YOUR STORY WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT

The NAMI Sharing Your Story with Law Enforcement (SYSLE) presentation program trains peers and families to share their stories during law enforcement trainings, such as Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training.

SUPPORT GROUPS

NAMI support groups are peer-led and offer participants the opportunity to share their experiences and gain support from other attendees.

NAMI CONNECTIONS

NAMI Connection is a support group for people with mental health conditions. Groups meet weekly, every other week, or monthly, depending on locations. This program is also available in Spanish, NAMI Conexión.

NOTE: At NAMITC we hold our support groups monthly at 6 pm before our General Meetings which are on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7 pm. You must pre-register.
